I installed it through the Package manager but it doesnt show up on the menu, so I tried downloading the latest version.. After doing the yum command it still doesnt show up
It would be my guess that you are (with the above error) running the version that you attempted to compile. I would remove that version. There should be something in the readme. If there is not you can go to the install directory and run make clean. Make clean may or may not work.
If you install it with yum it will install all the dependencies required by that rpm. These may or may not be the same requirement needed to compile the version yourself. SOMETIMEs if there is a problem compiling a particular app the packager may do some interesting things in order to make it run. That is the advantage of using package management(you do not have to figure those things for yourself).
If the above does not clear it you can try one more thing: yum remove xmms followed by yum install xmms.
