gtk pop up delay in SuSE 10.0

I'm running SuSE 10.0 and when running some GTK applications that produce modal dialogs (pop ups) there is a delay of several minutes before the dialog boxes are actually displayed on my monitor from this operating system. When running the same applications from a Debian Etch system there is no delay. I'm guessing there is a configutation setting that controls this, I just don't know where it is. Can anyone help?

enter the following command inside a terminal:

zenity --info --text="HELLO"

Is the problem still present?
