gtk+2.4.4 compile problems

ok so gaim says i need gtk.. oh joy!!! ok so i diwnloaded the latest stable source. and im trying to unpack it and it keeps saying theres no such file/directory. ive checked my spelling and all that fun stuff, its not working

also kinda showing off my illiteracy here

in this line
gzip -cd gtk+-2.4.4.tar.gz | tar xvf
how do i make this thing ^
