gtk+ -2.2.1 error help

Hi im trying to upgrade my GTK+ to version 2.2.1. I tried to configure it but I recieve this error message.. anyone got an idea?

Package xft was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xft.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xft' found
checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
configure: error: *** libX11 not found. Check 'config.log' for more details.

*also at one time I did succeed in installing version. 2.2.1 (before I had to reformat) anyways, how then do I upgrade it without screwing over my system?> thnx.

why are you trying to use a source install? just use the rpms. as for the error you actually have there though... install the free86-devel rpm and i assume there is also an xft-devel too
