gstreamer-related bug?

I just installed Pidgin, version 2.7.3, on my freshly installed copy of MEPIS 11. It fails to run, reporting this error message when I try to run it from a terminal (which I was doing because when I ran it from KDE, nothing happened other than the pigeon head bouncing for a few seconds).

Quote:
josh@mepis1:~$ pidgin

ERROR: Caught a segmentation fault while loading plugin file:
/usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstlv2.so

Please either:
- remove it and restart.
- run with --gst-disable-segtrap and debug.
Segmentation fault
Is this a bug? It can hardly be a corrupted file, because I just installed this copy of MEPIS 11. I guess the gstreamer packages aren't anything I can uninstall and do without: uninstalling any of them seems to mean uninstalling Pidgin and various other programs. I can use Kopete, but I prefer Pidgin.

When you Googled the error, did you find this --> http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/view...hp?f=8&t=30328? Which would have led you to this --> http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/view...267782#p267782. Which sounds like it very well may fix your Pidgin problem.

Yes, I think it's the same problem. I'm on it.

EDIT: Before I got around to trying the solution you found, while looking in repositories I haven't been using for a certain piece of software I discovered that the latest version of Pidgin I can find (2.9, MEPIS testing repository) seems to have fixed this bug anyway. Sorry, I thought I had the latest version (2.7.3, Debian Squeeze).

I'm not sure why I had to find it for you.

?! I beg your pardon, but nobody forced you to respond to my unfortunate post. I more explicitly apologize for not thinking of looking in the testing repositories.
