GRUB2 Read Error (Debian Squeeze)

I've just installed a copy of Debian Squeeze on my server, and on boot it's saying:

GRUB Read Error
Operating system not found
I've tried using the rescue cd to reinstall GRUB, but this just keeps happening. I'm running GRUB 2 and my drive structure is:
/dev/sda1 / ext3
/dev/sda5 swap swap

GRUB is installed to the MBR. The BIOS is set up correctly.
I'm pulling my hair out on this one. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Switching to LILO (without large-memory support, if it matters) solved all my issues. It appears GRUB2 just doesn't like old machines that well.

Have you tried manually booting from within grub?

I can't actually get into GRUB, since the error is stage 1.
I am able to boot into the partition via the rescue CD though.

What all is installed on the hard drive OS wise?

Can I ask what is being set for sda2, 3, and 4?

And how exactly are you trying to reinstall grub with the live cd?

Using both the "reinstall GRUB" option of the Rescue Mode, and running grub-install /dev/sda in the rescue shell.

Since the swap is an extended partition, it's using 5, since 2, 3, and 4 are reserved for primary.

Oh ok cool.

Have you tried reinstalling it manually via commands?

root (hdX,X)
setup (hd0)
Post any warnings or errors you get.

cd into /boot/grub and post the output of ls -al

I'm currently at work and don't have access to linux right now. What I did though was search high and low for you man, and I came across something that might help for the time being.
