You say you had a failed Ubuntu install which means start anew

Agreed. Often the best solution is to start over.

i think this might well still be related to op's other post (the transfer of iso to usb).
sounds like one of those unetbootin problems.

More details on your actual setup are needed and you can get that by going to the site below and reading the instructions on how to obtain the boot repair software and run it and then post a link to the output here. Make sure you select the option to Create BootInfo Summary and don't try to make any repairs.

A web-search of the error *with double-quotes around it*! returns a lot,
some of which might relate to your specific setup (asked for above)...
Maybe dig thru them, to see if something uniquely matches your setup.

Best wishes! (Keep digging...it's fun...at least to me!)

If you have the boot repair iso burned to a disk as an image, reboot the computer with that disk in the drive and set the CD to first boot priority. The quote below is from the boot repair page and explains what happens with the output.

Quote:
Boot-Repair (provided it has a network connection) will create a Ubuntu pastebin link for you to share that allows experienced members to see what's wrong with your boot.
You could also have used the Live CD on the flash drive which is explained under "2nd option" on that page.

That indicates an attempt to install using UEFI. Your boot repair output shows a standard MBR/BIOS install so don't boot in UEFI. Make sure you have the Toshiba 500GB drive set to first boot priority in the drive. Look at the last line of the boot repair which indicates you are booting EFI but do NOT have an EFI install. You need the BIOS set to CSM/Legacy and that varies with hardware. Check your manual for the computer.
