Unhappy GRUB overwrites my changes

Hi

to tell the kernel, that hdc should be handled by ide-scsi I have to append it to the kernel parameters - no problem.
But whenever I compile a new kernel (thats quite often) and update-grub my manual changes (also to old kernels) to menu.lst are gone.
How can I permanently edit the menu.lst or keep update-grub from thinking its smarter than me?

From my experience, you don't need to run update-grub to install new kernels to grub. Just change menu.lst and leave everything else untouched. If, for whatever reason, you need to run update-grub, you may need to make the changes in grub.conf. This is just a guess, since grub.conf is handled slightly different in SuSE (where I have my only experience).

Thank you for the answer

I know that I dont NEED to run it, but its just convenient (in debian I can have the package manager automagically update-grub after installing a new kernel-image).
I thought maybe there is a solution that still lets me use update-grub...
