Grub not loading any OS

Last night(for some idiodic reason) I decided to install another version of windows xp. Hoever there was no support for my wi-fi so I erased it.

The problem is that windows decided to kill of grub with its own bootloader.
I used my live CD to restore the bootloader, but it still refused to cooperate. I even re-installed my distro of linux. Now GRUB loads but it won't load any OS. Even linux with the default grub configuration.

It gives me a 'Error 17: Cannot Mount Selected partition'

Can anyone help me out with this?

update
This problem only occurs with my mepis distro. I don't have any problems loading my mandrake distro. The only problem I have with mandrake is that it will not work with my wi-fi(regardless of everything I've tried)

I had a similar problem with ubuntu, it turned out that when I had the boot order in BIOS to boot my primary slave before my primary master the grub installer got confused with hd0, hd1 and /dev/hda, dev/hdb; it seemed that it got them back to front, ie hd1 = /dev/hda

so when it thought it was booting the linux distro it was actually referencing the ntfs partition on the other hdd

I managed to fix my problem.
I checked out what was different from my mandrake bootloader and applied it to my mepis bootloader.
now it works fine.

Apperently, linux likes to map its partition as hd0 even though it's still my secondary hd
I actually find it kind of comical that my hd0 is /dev/hdd1 and hd1 is /dev/hdb1

thanks for your input
