grub mismatched stages?

I am a lilo guy, always worked never messed with it.
I am installing gentoo on an athlon64, it will not let me use lilo, only grub, so I followed the directions exactly (8 times no less)

every time I do the setup (hd0) I get this error:

Error 6: Mismatched or corrupt version of stage1/stage2

I have tried the emerge --usepkg grub
and I have tried emerge grub

Each time I have unmerged the previous

I made the config file, it is bsic, but I cannot post as it is on the system not yet working, I have re-written it w/ the instructions and/or example many times now.

I have done all the cp of the files for the stages each time as well.

since no-one has answered try this
get a rescue cd like knoppix load it and then make your /boot partitiion read/writeable and check your grub files.

you don't mention if you are running your 64 on a 32 bit kerrel or a 64 bit kernel.....I use the ia32.
what you are looking for is any zero byte size grub file or U may be using a 64 bit kernel that grub may struggle with.

I can not test this idea out as too lazy to install a 64 system at this stage.

check my troubleshooter and see if you get any responses past your first error please.
if you can't then you need to replace your gentoo files with knoppix grub files.
you will need to make your /boot partition rw.....dejuvu?

and then check again

BTW never used gentoo

I do not knwo what caused the problem, but I rebooted it and re-did the grub install stuff and it worked fine.

it was 64bit

it's all working now.
