GRUB loading Error 17
I am new to linux, and a bit ago installed Ubuntu as a dual boot with my windows XP. Ubuntu was too slow and I didnt have the time to figure it out and consequently just kinda forgot about it.
Now today i needed more hardrive space and ubuntu was taking up 30 gigs of my 160 gb hardrive. So i deleted what was on the 30 gig partition and repartitioned it into another drive (G:). Then, for the first time ever, my computer crashes, so i reboot it, and there is the black screen with "GRUB Loading stage 1.5. GRUB Loading, please wait... Error 17" I googled and found stuff, but I'm not that tech savy and probably should never have messed around with linux or my HD in the first place. How do i fix this issue. I no longer have ubuntu installed on the computer, I wiped its partition clean. I don't understand what "in the BIOS set....." means Thanks |
Grub is a boot loader that let you choose your operating system. When you deleted the partition with ubuntu you also deleted part of grub. Now for a repair, you will need a use your XP disk and in recovery mode enter 'fixmbr' without the quotes. If you do not have a windows cd then you can download super grub and it can repair your mbr.

F9 GRUB freeze after update
I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this...
I have Fedora 9 on my Lenovo ThinkPad, which has been running great for 3-4 month now... I just updated (yum update, which I have also never had any trouble with) and now the system freezes at boot, the screen just says "GRUB" at the top. I tried booting from the DVD and into Rescue, then reinitializing GRUB based on this post... http://www.machinehead0.com/index.ph...linux-tool-tip But no luck. :( Can anyone help?? - Thomas |

Yes Please go to 'forums' and then select the forum to best fit your problem then at the top left or bottom left of the page is a button to open a new thread in that forum. Enter your title and problem and that will give you a lot more exposure than here. A lot of people look over threads once there has been a solution posted. |
