Unhappy Grub laoding stage 1.5

Hi, first post.
I have a dual boot computer w/windows xp pro and suse 10, yesterday I tried to boot up my pc and this is as far as it got.

[B]Grub loading stage 1.5
grub loading, please wait ......
Error 17

I tried to reboot and do xpress recovery by pressing f9 but neither my keyboard nor my mouse seem to be working, I have a cordless combo, I even tried to remove it and install a wired keyboard and it did not work either, any ideas on what i need to do?
Thank you for any help.

error 17 I believe is "Can't find partition to mount".

Can you boot with your suse disc and type linux rescue at the boot prompt? Then paste your /boot/grub/grub.conf and/or /boot/grub/menu.lst file and the output of fdisk -l. Chances are there's just an error somewhere.

If you're good at following directions, try looking through these try following task J to get into a grub prompt and then see if you can follow the A tasks to find the right partition and table. You'll have to do some of this stuff anyway, even if you do post the output requested above.

With the first instal cd/dvd in the drive, boot the machine. You should have the option of booting from cd or hard disk. Try the hard disk first. It SuSE still can't find itself, reboot from cd.

Create mount points in the running version of SuSE for the partitions you created when you initially installed SuSE. Mount only the partiion which contains /boot. Something like: mkdir /mnt/boot to create the mount point. Then 'mount /dev/hdax /mnt/boot (or whatever the partition number is) to mount your boot partition (if you have is seperate fron the rest). Now you can access the files in /mnt/boot/grub/ to get at your menu.lst.

If /boot is seperate from the rest (/ [root]), then make a mount point for / [root] and mount that as well. You may need to edit /etc/fstab.

Copy the contents of /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst and /?/etc/fstab and post them here. Such errors as you describe are most likely (in my experience) a descrepancy between the grub config file (menu.lst) and fstab.
