What did you do to get in this horrible predicerment? I have encountered this problem before by switching from a LILO based-system to a grub-based system.
I had to do some major HDD work to get rid of it.
I would suggest getting MEPIS linux or KNOPPIX and trying to install GRUB using their grub installation program. (That is, if you can't get to a command line on your distro, which i assume if grub isn't working, you can't)
The command is: grub-install

i had this "horrible predicament" once with SuSE 9.1 when i was trying to triple-boot.
I had to reinstall SuSe and let it overwrite my bootloader.
Btw, i recently wiped my harddrive to make room for slackwhere
