When I installed Debian sarge it gave an error when I tried to install Grub, so I used LILO. I figured I would just install it manually. So I 'apt-get install grub' and typed 'grub-install --no-floppy /dev/hda' and it just sits there, hung... why??

I have an Opteron on a SK8N mobo with 1gig o ram... 3 hard drives, 2 IDE 1 SCSI... hda and sda are formatted for NTFS (windows /root is on the scsi drive), linux is installed on the primary slave.

Actually I have a 5x86.

Umm, roughtly speaking if Debian is on primary slave do you mean the second ide and on first controller?

In which case you may consider the linux is /dev/hdb and not hda.
check you /etc/fstab just to be sure.
2) When you first install grub into your mbr, you may not yet have all of the other drives mentioned.

3) I don't know debian but b4 you try grub make sure you have a normal rescue floppy or know how to use debian if its cd has a rescue option for LILO.
