grub gone bad

Hi,

Redhat 9 came with the Grub boot loader (why aren't they using LILO anyway, i thought that was the standard). Since a few weeks the loader is not functioning properly. Instead of a graphical interface where I used to choose the operating system, i see a black screen with nothing whatsoever. Yet if i blindedly move the cursor up and down and hit enter i can choose which OS to use. And also when I boot up Redhat, I see horizontal lines on top of the default text. After a couple of seconds the screen gets back to normal. This lead me to think whether the kernel might be bad too. What do you think? Is it possible to reinstall this grub?

So far i have tried pressing esc (thinking that the splash screen could a been corrupt) and also tried the /sbin/grub-install.
Neither worked.

Thanks

Personally I prefer grub. It does sound like the splash is corrupt just get another one and replace it or make your own:

Yeah it was indeed the splash screen. Thanks a lot for your help grym! I don't know how the initial screen got corrupt. Do these things simply get broke like this, once in a while? And also do you know any other nice archive that has lots of screens?

It's just like any other file, they can become corrupt(backup, backup, backup heh). As far as other sites well just do a search like "grub splash screens" on www.google.com/linux or maybe www.google.com/bsd

Well one last thing about this splash screen issue. Now that I know how to create my own screens with the convert command (thanks the site you mentioned), I am now wondering what the maximum resolution can be. Again, on the tkdack web site they say 640x480 with 15 colors. Is there a way to increase this resolution so that my celebrity pics would look better :D ??

Thx!!

from what I've read this is a hard limit in that point of boot. put your nice images in the kernel boot screens
