GRUB Error 16

Im getting error 16 when i start up, ive looked around and have found that this may be caused because of a missing master boot record which is random, because this started happening lately and there are very few times that i could start linux. My problem is that i dont know how to fix it with Vista, all the fixes are how you do it with your xp disk but thats not my case, n e one know how to do this with Vista and its mbr? and how it would randomly be lost like it was if it is the problem

hey there. Ive the same problem on an older laptop that couldn't read partitions more than a certain size. I believe you can get around the problem by creating a "/boot" partition right at the begining of the disk and having the bootfiles in there.

I assume your maybe using Ubuntu (or any of its derivitives) and I can say that all of the installers have an option to create a partition and set it to "/boot". Normally no more than 200mb would be required for such a partition.

I could be incorrect about this fixing your problem. But you never know

Turns out its a diff problem after looking around at some forums. My computer froze and then i restarted to error 16 inconsistent filesystem structure. I popped in my Ubuntu Studio CD and went to rescue system, i was then asked to check which one my root user directory was and i chose dev/sdb2 which was the only one that didnt give me an error when choosing it. I then was asked wat to do and had the option of running a command from that filesystem. I ran sudo fsck it asked me if im sure i hit y and it automatically filled in yes... then it froze, i repeated after a few restarts for the same result. Then i tried fsck, fsck dev/hda1, fsck dev/sdb1, which all gave me the superblock error that was posted before. I have two scsi hard disks one has vista the other has ubuntu studio, vista starts fine, the weird thing, sometimes ill get error 16, another time it booted once, then froze, nd a few times it froze while trying to boot up, and a couple time i just got a grub command line, i also got error 18 once, nd then restarted nd got error 16, is my linux haunted lol
