I'm a newbie, myself, but the prompt you're getting is the same as if you execute grub from a command line while in Linux. Maybe your /etc/grub.conf file is getting wiped, and grub is asking for manual information?

I'd recommend booting from a floppy (if you didn't make a bootable floppy, I'd say definitely do it on your next reinstall), and check the /etc/grub.conf file to see if it looks right.

How are you installing Red Hat & Grub? Are you dual booting a hard drive, or are they installed on separate drives? Are you changing the configuration after you install it?

For a dual boot system, Grub would have to start both Windows and Red Hat. If you can't start Red Hat, how are you starting Windows?

We need you system's configuration and the specifics of how you set up Red Hat when you install, specifically:

- What drive are you installing to?
- What type of install are you doing?
- Where are you telling the install program to put the boot loader?

I have WinME on C:, WinXP Pro on drive D:. After that I installed RH9. I have a 40 GB HDD and I installed GRUB in the MBR. The thing that happened was that I got the grub prompt and it was not taking any commands as described in the GRUB manual on the GNU website. So my question really is:

1. How do I solve this problem if it comes up in the future, and

2. How do I install GRUB now that I have already installed LILO on the MBR?
