Success!
Of a sort.

I managed two good burns on a third computer. It does seems like the more used the drive, the worse the result in burning DL discs.

My main PC did not want to know. The secondary one got to almost the end and failed when ending the session. The third drive used has burned fewer than 5 discs and successfully wrote two copies.

However the discs failed to boot the radio. So back to the documentation.

blkid tells me that both the source and copy are of type udf.

Next step will be to try with dd, as suggested. Currently my Grandson is staying with us so I don't have free access to "his" PC, which is the one with the "good" DVD writer.

I will revert.

Hi,

Congrats.

That's my experience too (from a few years ago). Age sucks.

> However the discs failed to boot the radio.

If the radio is actually a computer, then there could be an El Torito boot
record for BIOS or EFI. There could also be custom boot stuff in the first
32 KB of the medium.
Such would not be data files but nevertheless part of the data and thus
should get copied by dd.

Have a nice day

Thomas

I have generated MD5sums for the original and copy discs. They are reported as identical.

Quote:
Verbatim DVD:

4095714+0 records in
4095714+0 records out
8388022272 bytes (8.4 GB, 7.8 GiB) copied, 680.358 s, 12.3 MB/s
eadad8378dff9969d9714c561d4f7835

Original:

4095714+0 records in
4095714+0 records out
8388022272 bytes (8.4 GB, 7.8 GiB) copied, 712.273 s, 11.8 MB/s
eadad8378dff9969d9714c561d4f7835
Does this in fact mean that the discs ARE in fact identical? Is boot data included in the MD5sum?

Thanks for any reply.

Hi,

yes, identical MD5 sums mean that the copying worked fine.
Any boot provision should be included.

You will just have to try whether the DVD works.
Not all info of a DVD is inside the payload data area, though.
There could remain obstacles with Digital Rights Management stuff outside
the payload data area, or the software in the payload area could insist
in seeing a factory pressed DVD-ROM with a particular Media Id which
recordable DVD don't have.

At least you did your best to make an exact copy without circumventing
possible copy protection which might be illegal to even be discussed in
detail. (There are cracker forums, i guess. But you will meet people of
questionable intentions at such places.)

Have a nice day

Thomas
