Groupware Calendar Synchronization: Thunderbird <-> Kontact incompatibility

Hello everyone,

in my efforts to find a groupware solution that statifies KDE/Kontact and Thunderbird/Lightning users equally, I have stumbled upon a problem that appears to be Client related.

While using Citadel, Thunderbird would sync its calendar using SyncKolab (IMAP-based) and Kontact would use GroupDAV. While Kontact worked perfectly, syncing with Thunderbird caused the calendar events to become 'invisible' to both Citadel and Kontact.

Now I am testing eGroupware, where Thunderbird sync's using CalDAV and Kontact still GroupDAV. Now events added by Kontact become invisible to eGroupware and Thunderbird when they are edited using Kontact...

The Problem is hence in the way Kontact and Thunderbird handle their iCal entries (at least that's the only explanation I can come up with). Is there a known incompatibility between the iCal libraries of these two Clients? Has anyone had a similar issue?

And on another key issue: Is there a GroupWare solution that does not require me to setup a while network on a box (as in OpenXChange or Zarrafa) and still allows Thunderbird and Kontact to sync?

Kind regards,

ichrispa

Solving my own problem:

The vanishing contacts in eGroupware where not an iCal issue. The problem was that eGroupware identifies the owners of events issued with GroupDav or CalDav solely by email, not by login or user id. Looking the the database, there is a table called egw_addressbook which links emails to user ids from the table egw_users.

The problem was that I used the same email address more then once - once for the admin account and once for my own user account. The system did not prohibit this. When sending iCal entries to the server, it apparently had problems identifying the user these entries belonged to. They were visible when selecting "owner too" as filter, but they were not identified as belonging to my user id.

The problem was fixed by manually removing the duplicate mail address from the database and re-uploading the iCal entries.
