greeter program
 

Hello, I'm new to linux and have some troubles. I'm running Fedora Core 1 on a dual boot machine (with WinXp). On start Fedora is supposed to open KDE.
One day I pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del on Fedora becuse it lookes like it was not
working (don't say anything... I'm still used to Windows). From that day on
KDE doesn't start.
At the beginning, before I'm asked for yhe user and password, I got a "no write access to .ICEauthority" message.
I solve this with chmod. I gave write access to all users. But now, when I start the computer a message says
"The greeter program appears to be crashing. I will atempt to use a
different one". This message used to appear after the "write access" one.

Does anyone have an idea on how to solve this ?? I'm sure there's a way
other than reinstall everything (again, I am still used to Windows).

I'm not a KDE user but if you don't have any preferences you don't mind losing, you can just remove any files or directories in your users home directory that pertain to KDE and such.. wipe them out and then attempt to restart KDE, like as if its the first time your booting into it, etc. There is never a reason to reinstall, that's always a last resort in Linux, unlike Windows.. ;)

I've tried but it didn't work. I removed all kde* files from /tmp, renamed .kde directory from my users home directory and renamed .ICEauthority file from the same dir.

Still when it boots I get an "No write access to .ICEauthority" message, and
kde doesn't load. I've tried to do chmod 7777 to the file but it didn't work
either: message is still there on reboot.

Does anyone have a clue ??

Create a new user and see if it does the same for them.

That's a good one. How do I set KDE to run on boot with that new user??

try looking in:

/etc/X11/xinit

the file:

/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

should be a shortcut to the default window manager

or you could rename "xinitrc.kde" to "xinitrc" if that confuses you less!

After having done that, log in as your user and type "startx"
