Grayscale font smoothing in Gnome2... and KDE?

i really love how Gnome2 render my fonts with these settings:

smoothing: Grayscale
Hinting: none

since fonts are rendered by XFT, i know there's a way to obtain the same effect under KDE3.... but How? in Kcontrol-Panel there is only an option for activate subpixel hinting.... maybe messing around with .font.conf?

please help me
