Angry graphics all messed up

I've got a baffling new problem here. Yesterday, my RedHat 8.0 machine was running Gnome at 1024x768, since that is the maximum resolution of my LCD display. This morning, the computer booted up and complained that it couldn't start graphics. I found that it would work at 640x480 or 800x600, but not 1024x768.

I decided to update the Nvidia driver for the GeForce4 in this computer. That didn't help the graphics at all, but it did mess up the non-graphical console. Now if I stop X, the text screen usually comes up really dark so that I can barely read any of it. I have no cursor and the screen doesn't scroll, so once I type to the bottom of the screen I can't see anything else that I type.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this problem? I'm stumped.
