Graphical network throughput monitor
 

I am looking for something a little better than Gnome's System Monitor to observe NIC throughput. Something where I can actually see the scale on the graph. I have found a number of "professional" utilities to monitor whole networks. I am looking for something just to monitor one PC while I am logged into the PC. I don't need remote monitoring and all that fancy stuff. Something on the order of the network monitor in Windoze task manager :-(

Any recommendations? I am running Ubuntu 7.10 with a Gnome desktop. I have seen a couple of apps for KDE however, I do not want to install KDE just for this one purpose.

Use MRTG. It is super simple and will draw nice graphs for you. You can set it up locally on your machine.

Try gkrellm, it should be good enough for what you need.

Thanks H_TeXMeX_H I installed gkrellm. It seems to work OK except that I cannot slow down the sampling rate. I can set if from 2/second to 20/second but the graph seems to grow at the same rate. I really need one update per 5 or more seconds or so to get an reasonable average. I will play with it some more.

Well, the updates are done on a per second basis. This means it takes that many polls per second. The update is always done every second, but the number of polls taken in that second varies with what you might want.

I just upgraded a machine to Ubuntu 8.04. I noticed that the built in system monitor seemed to be a little better. I stretched the window to full screen height and got exactly what I was looking for - a simple, readable network monitor. Tried stretching the system monitor in 6.10 and got the same thing. I hate these self-inflicted issues :-((
