graphical and CLI problem with YaST2 (SuSE 9.1Pro)

I have an Athlon K8, running SuSE 9.1 Pro (in 32-bit mode), and KDE_3.2.
While tryingto install software for a HP printer/scanner/fax, I installed and upgraded (maybe too many) *-devel packages, and can no longer use YaST/YaST2. Actually, I cannot even right-click to "Adjust Date and Time", either.

Graphically, I access Control Center, and then from any Function (eg, Software - Online Update) enter root password at the KDESU prompt window. The window clears then message says "Starting YaST2" but hangs indefinitely... no error message or output. There is no yast log file under /var/log/ to see messages. From CLI, as root, the command "Yast2" also just hangs without error or output.

I have read through the forums, and seen several situations like this, which say to force an update of certain yast or qt related files. From the CLI, I can uninstall or force install using rpm -Uvh. I have tried the following, which have all been successful, but not helpful...

# rpm -Uvh ftp.ale.org/pub/suse/i386/9.1/suse/src/qt3-extensions-3.3.1-32.src.rpm
# rpm -Uvh /home/bill/bin/YAST2/control-center*.rpm

# yast2 ws_single
No such client module ws_single
Run 'yast2 -h' for help on usage

# SuSEconfig <completes successfully>
# online_update <hangs with no errors or output>
# date MMDDhhmm <successful, but not right-click and “Adjust Date and Time”>

Thanks for your help,

re: YaST2 problem

ok here was the fix
rpm --force --nodeps -Uvh /media/cdrecorder/suse/i586/yast*.rpm
rpm --force --nodeps -Uvh /media/cdrecorder/suse/i586/liby2*.rpm
rpm --force --nodeps -Uvh /media/cdrecorder/suse/i586/hwinfo*.rpm

apparently, there WERE error messages when rpm yast* update was run, saying that liby2 and hwinfo needed to be updated.. Having done that, it seems to be working.
