I am trying to get my Nikon Coolpix 5000 to work with gPhoto2. It is not a listed camera. I went to gphoto.org and found new releases of libgphoto2 2.1.3 that list my camera as supported.

I am new to compiling and installing software, hence my post. I have read the README and INSTALL files that came with the new version. They do not tell me if I need to remove the older version of libgphoto2 that came with Mandrake 9.1. It was version 2.1.1.

My basic question is, can I install the new version, without removing the old version? Is there a 'upgrade option' at some point in the configure, make, make install process?

I'm very reluctant to remove libgphoto2 2.1.1. There is a long list of dependant files that will remove, including Sane front ends and backends. It took me three months to get my flat bed scanner working under Linux, I would prefer not to have to go through that again.

I recommend finding the mandrake RPM that includes the latest version built for 9.1, then use the package manager to 'Upgrade' the RPM.

P.S. Have you tried the other Nikkon drivers already? My Nikkon coolpix 990 works with the 900, 900S, the 910, 950, 950S and of course the 990 driver.

Your answer makes a lot of sense, however, I havn't got a clew where to find an updated RPM for Mandrake 9.1, or if one exists. I have looked at Mandrakes site, with no success. Seems you have to pay for any information. Any suggestions where, and how to look?

As far as the Coolpix 5000, I tried it with the 990 driver, but it did not work. I can mount the device, but gphoto2 will not talk to it.

Still looking for help. The Nikon coolpix 5000 supports two protocols over USB. You can set it up to work as a mass storage device, or use PTP protocol. The Windoze drivers access the camera as a mass storage device. I have done some reading on Gphoto2, and I am not sure if I can use it as a mass storage device or do I use it as PTP device.

I can not find any RPMs with libgphoto2 at level 2.1.3. This seems to be the level I need to support the coolpix 5000. So that leaves be with the compiling libgphoto2. So, back to my original question, is there a way to upgrade libghpoto2 without removing all the other packages?

Sorry for the belated reply. My email notifications got turned off. It might be easier to get a USB card reader, mount as mass storage device and you are independant of the camera model. Search here for CompactFlash Reader and you will find many threads.

I use a nikon995. I had a dual boot for win98 along with mdk9.1 I loaded drivers for win98 and when I saw how slow pictures were loading I went to wally world and bought a card reader. got a kodak that reads 4 different type cards. am junking win98 tomorrow if my cd's arrive in mail for mdk9.2. It is so convienient to pull out the card and stuff it in the reader while your camera with a 2nd card in it remains ready to go. and to be able to read friends cards whose computer with windows suddenly refuses to recognise their camera.
