MEPIS 7 has the GParted disk partition utility. I'm sure I recall previous MEPISes having QtParted. Is Gparted better in some way? I just think GParted is awfully slow to scan, even on my new 80 GB IDE hard drive, which isn't large by current standards. I don't remember QtParted taking as long.
The difference between the two is that one is built using the gtk toolkit, and the other is built using qt. This would suggest that one is for kde and the other gnome. In either case, they are really just frontends for parted.
If one is slower for you, try installing the other I guess.
qtparted has been designed using qt, and not kdelibs, so it really isn't a kde program. gparted uses gtk, but it's not a gnome program either. So, I'd use whatever works best.
There was some notice many years ago telling that the qtparted had been abandoned, and the latest notes on the changlogs if my memory serves correctly are from 2004 or so. So I'd say use gparted, doesn't matter what's your desktop of choice. It's a very active project and well maintained.
The problem may not be gparted but Mepis and your system.
You might try the latest edition of a live-cd partitioning tool. I seem to remember that the live-cds use gparted, though using different linux distros as an OS and packaging different tools with gparted. I usually use Parted Magic, but others use GPartedLiveCD with satisfaction.
