gparted : repartition / and /home

Hi everybody,

Running out of disk space on "/" while having a lot left on "/home", I've tried to re-partition these two.

However, with gparted I cannot. Trying to unmount before repartitioning leads to the following error message :

umount: /home: device is busy

How can I repartition my / and /home ? Thanks a lot for your answer !!

Hi, in order to modify hard disk layout, you need to have the partitions you are about to modify unmounted. This implies not having any program trying to access any file on it. For your /home, the easiest is to drop out of X (GUI) and use only console mode as root. for / ; you best bet is to boot a liveCD and use a partition editor from there (this is the recommended procedure for any partition modifications.)

This might help

Agreed. The best way to go is by using a live CD. Most distros come with a live CD and a partition editor. However you can also use this.

Its a live CD that's only really used for one thing, GParted. You have other basic linux options as well, but mainly GParted is all its for.
