Got sound error after recompiling the kernel in Mepis 3.4.3

Hi!

I am using Mepis 3.4.3, after compiling a kernel 2.6.16 I get:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I also did alsaconf but it can't load any driver. I still have my previous 2.6.15-1-586tsc kernel and it seems working fine but won't work on VMWare. The 2.6.16 works in VMWare without the sound. Any idea how to fix this thing up?

it just sounds like you've compiled the wrong hardware support in the new kernel to be honest.... or not compiled in the correct support for alsa/oss

If so, how am I going to resolve this? How will I know what kernel to compile?

did you choose the kernel parameters yourself or was it a stock kernel that you downloaded?

I just downloaded it from the synaptics. I downloaded both the source and the headers (2.6.16). Do you have any idea how to run VMWare in Mepis 3.4.3? I tried every instruction on the net. I ended up upgrading to 2.6.16 from 3.4.3's 2.6.15-1-586tsc. It worked but I lost my sound though. I am also wondering about vmware-any-any-update and how to use it to ease the installation and retain Mepis 3.4.3's 2.6.16 kernel.
