Google Earth 7.1.8 on Ubuntu 16.04 not working with proxy

New to the forum.

I've been trying to install Google Earth (free and latest version) on Ubuntu 16.04.

I followed the directions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GoogleEarth

Unfortunately when launching the application the earth and map features do not load and all of the setting are grayed out.

After much searching, testing, and posting to the Google forums, it's clear (I've seen the traffic) that Google Earth is not respecting the proxy setting and trying to connect directly to their address via ports 80 and 443. Unfortunately (and for obvious security reasons) I cannot post the actual results or logs. Other applications do work just fine (in fact, Google Earth on Windows works properly behind the same proxy).

My sysadmin folks say that the traffic is allowed but only through the proxy (they will not add a proxy exception to all the traffic to connect directly).

I've tried a lot of things I can find online to get this working and have fallen short at every turn.

Happy to try anything and provide the details I can. :)

Thank!

Hi jkurucar,

Entering google earth linux proxy in Google leads to this page as the first result:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-proxy-645362/

Does it solve your problem? (refer to posts #8 and #10 in particular)

Thanks hydrurga, I was referred to this site by one of the Google forum experts and the post you linked was actually one of the first things I tried. There are some other closely related posts that led to me trying a few things that did not help either.

The reason I created a new post instead of extending the one you linked was because 1) it's many years old (circa 2008) and 2) Google Earth is multiple major revisions different, meaning the problems are very likely different. This is also why I included the Google Earth version in my title so that in 5 or 9 years from now people understand a little bit more.

Unfortunately I am still seeking a solution. The attempts I've made (including those in the linked post) are not successful at getting Google Earth to honor the proxy.

Thanks again for the help.
