Good Music Player
 

Hey all...

I am looking for a good program to play my mp3s and other such music files with. I am used to MusicMatch Juke box on Windows. Does linux have something similar to that? A program that would allow me to rip files from a CD would be nice as well.

hm... the de facto favorite for playing mp3s is a program called xmms. it looks and feels a lot like winamp. i'm not sure what musicmatch looks like, so i won't know about that.

I have tried xmms. However, I am looking for something with a little bit more to it. A program I can use to create music libraries, rip music from CDs and so on...

I'm one of those freaks with 10 GBs of MP3s. :D

u can use "grip" to rip music from cds. also lame a good music gripper.but lame is not gui based.

or u could combine the 2 like i do :)
grip is just a graphical front-end for some tools like cdparanoia (the tool that rips the wav files) and mp3 or ogg encodeders.

i use grip with the LAME encoder and it works excellent. never had a single problem with albums i ripped

Also, I have heard that MusicMatch is avail for Linux.

how did you combine lame and grip. i tried it but the encoded mp3 is noisy

There are quite a few choices for mp3, ogg players, XMMS appears to head the pack.

- xmms : has a interface similar to winamp, play all sorts of audio formats, has a lot of visualization and sound effects plugins and is skinnable. XMMS still rules.

- freeamp: it also supports a lot of audio format, skinnable. It also has a music database and a few more fance features.

- Real Player: Real Player 8 , checkout the alpha version of Real One for Linux is also out.

- Music Match: This is run on wine, so is quite slow. however is has some very nice features. But it is not availabel for download at musicmatch website. I found a copy at tucows.com a few months back.

I agree with grip as a front-end for lame and cdparanoia. Works very well, and gives very nice quality mp3's. And of course xmms to play them. :)
