Question Good Hard drive test software?

Hope this is the correct forum, If not, please let me know.

I recently acquired a 2nd-hand 40GB HD. The *only* thing I know for sure is that Windoze XP is installed on it, but it crashes during boot-up.

I'm looking for a program to do a comprehensive testing of each sector on the drive. For example, something I can leave running all night if needed.

Since I have 2 computers (WinXP, and SUSE), it doesn't matter which OS the program runs under. Given a choice, I'd prefer running under Linux, but my first priority is that it does a good, deep, comprehensive test. So OS is a secondary consideration.

I don't care about any existing software on the drive, so erasing it is not a problem.

Oh, and one small thing, the software needs to be either freeware, or shareware. Sorry, don't have the budget to buy anything at this time.

Any advice or suggestions is mucho appreciated!

Try going to the manufacturer's website. They usually have diagnostic utilities available for free

Also, you can do a Google search for tools like that. You may want to reformat or shred the drive if something comes up to see if that fixes it. Chances are though, if you have bad sectors, shredding or reformatting won't help at all. Could just be XP...

Thumbs up Thanks for the suggestions

Thanks y'all.

I followed J.W.'s advice and went to the manufacture's website. The prg wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it do do a scan and mark out some bad sectors.

Next time, I'll know to also try the Linux badblocks program. That's the bad part about being a newbie at this, I don't even know what software I have pre-installed in my OS that will do exactly what I need.

And btw, I did google around, but didn't find any freeware to do what I wanted. Thanks for the suggestion though. And as for reformatting/shredding, I'd already planned to reformat the drive. I only mentioned that the XP on it was crashing, as a point of reference to mean that since I know nothing else about the drive, it could have problems and needs a thorough scan.

Again, thanks for the suggestions.

I don't know half of what's available, either. But, my attitude is that it probably IS available, so I just a websearch on "linux disk test" or something like that to try to find it.
