going through previous bash commands corrupts console text?

Not really a big deal, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed that when you press up to go through previous executed commands parts of the console often get garbled and the prompt raises a line or so each time. I believe this happens in the standard console as well as virtual consoles. I have bash 2.05, do you know if this is fixed in later versions and why it happens?

I have never seen this happen before, not in my 6 to 7 years dealing with *nix operating systems..
