gnucash network files not managed

On a network file Gnucash does not rename the primary to backup and rename the temp to primary on save. The result is that the next open does not reflect changes made in the last session. (you have to fo find the temp and that starts to be a real mess as you can't even save-as to overwrite the primary)

But It works find on local files just like its supposed to

The network files are smbfs mounted via autofs. System is standard RH9 install updated via apt-get but this problem has occurred ever since I upgraded to RH9

Any ideas on how I can fix this?
