What are the current options and, er, any recommendations? Anything really flashy out there at the moment?

not sure what you mean by 'flashy' but keep in mind that wysywig (what you see is what you get) editors might be decent for light web page work but are far from perfect, and often either insert more code then necessary to do the job or sometimes create syntax erros, for anything serious it's better recommended to learn to code html and use a plain text editor imho, and even WITH a wysiwig editor it is best to understand html anyways so you can clean up the code after the wysiwig has done it's job

Disclosure: I don't like most of the WYSIWYG editors and hence have not really tried any of the Linux ones.

You could use something like Quanta Plus. But in my experience, you need to get into the code (that means using a text editor) and to see the results in a real web browser or three.

Something that offers syntax highlighting and perhaps code completion. Most decent editors can do that for (x)html, JavaScript, PHP, CSS and any other languages you may use. Personally, I use Vim.

The "Linux attitude" towards web programming is usually to stay close to the source code and learn how to program it from inside a text editor.

THanks for the suggestions, guys. Further investigation has led to the discovery that a lot of folks will not use the same package for both editing AND ftp. They seem to favor two separate programs that best perform each task individually. Just thought I'd share that with you. -:)
