GNU/Linux vs. GNU/OpenSolaris

hi guys. i just ran into this distro: http://www.gnusolaris.org/ on distrowatch.com and i was wondering if anyone could elaborate a little about what advantages/disadvantages the opensolaris kernel has when compared to the linux kernel. :study:

Eh, these people will fit in nicely with Debian Crowd.........they have the same 'I love RMS' mentality............

The opensolaris kernel is not coverd under the GPL its got another licence called the CDDL its listed on this web page if your intrested ttp://www.opensolaris.org/os/about/faq/licensing_faq/

the operating system you mention in your post uses the kernel from opensolaris and other elements from the debin project. So you have a mix of diffrent licenced software. Some GNU some BSD and some CDDL

NOTE: Not sure on the BSD cause theres like 2 of them and they may or may not be included depending on what software packages are installed.

Ohh and not to mention whatever QT uses too :P

but what would be an example of technical reasons why someone would want to replace the linux kernel on a distro with the one from opensolaris??

i mean, i kinda get the impression this might be one of those "just because i can" projects - what do you think??

what kinda stuff might the opensolaris kernel be better at than the linux kernel?? memory management?? security maybe??

thanks for pointing-out the CDDL licensing... i'll definitely be looking into that license to see what it's main characteristics are...

all in all, i'm not considering using a GNU/OpenSolaris system or anything like that... i'm just quite curious and would like to learn a few reasons why someone would prefer GNU/OpenSolaris over GNU/Linux...

There already have been complaints from the Debian camp because they believe that ccdl and the gpl are not compatible.
