gnome2 - several minor issues

im currently working on moving frome gnome to gnome2.

running debian linux testing/unstable on an ibm thinkpad a20p

my issues:

i can add the gnome2 mail monitor to the panel however i wish it would show me how many new/unread messages i have - it doesnt it just says either: "no mail" or "you've got mail".
Anyone knows the way to make it work right? I've seen it work properly on another computer.

when switching the panel to transparent background - i cant add more launchers/applets since theres nowhere to right click on.
I have no resize buttons and have two seperate panels: one on top and another on @ he bottom.
However i would like to be able to still access the panel properties.

I havent found the corresponding entries in the gconf-editor or anywhere. Also i have no clue where the darn config-files are placed.

I've been googleing the whole day - plz help

thx in advance,
