gnome wrecked my kde settings

I recently built gnome 2.8 from source. Previously I was using kde. I had both of them working smoothly as of today. The last thing that I remember doing today was building libgtksource* and gedit and installing them.

Now when I log into a kde session, almost all my items are gone except for home and firefox. The panel has also been stripped bare of almost any kde applications and in their place are some gnome programs. Previously, gnome didn't touch the kde panel settings.

Any ideas? gnome conspiracy to wipe out kde?

At least try to point me to the files in which the kde panel entries are stored.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I also messed around with the file associations in gnome before this happened.

OK I have the problem fixed. It seems that after I installed Gnome 2.8, I added the environment variable XDG_DATA_DIRS to /etc/profile and set it to /opt/gnome/share:/usr/share. Kde was still happily using
its cache of the system settings in /var/kdecache-yale but when that expired, it resulted in the wrecked desktop/panel I was talking about.

I appended /opt/kde/share to XDG_DATA_DIRS and deleted /var/kdecache-yale and everything was
fine again.
