Gnome won't start

I'm using SuSE 9.2 and can't get my Gnome to start.

I installed SuSE 9.2, and then installed supplementary 9.2 rpms from the SuSE ftp site (to give me KDE 3.4). I never logged into Gnome before I installed the supplementary rpms.

I am much more familiar with KDE than Gnome, but would like to try using Gnome more, so I am more familar with it.

The computer starts KDM at boot. Gnome doesn't show in the list. However, I can down the box to a command prompt, start GDM, and Gnome appears in the list. Unfortunately, I cannot login to Gnome. I get an error saying that there is a problem with Gnome and suggests trying to login to Gnome with the failsafe Gnome option. I can successfully login to Gnome using that failsafe option.

After the login fails, it tells me to check .xsession-errors file in my home directory. The file is created, but is empty.

I have reinstalled all the rpms for Gnome that I can find... but I suppose it is possible I am missing something that Gnome needs.

The only thing I can find in /var/log/messages is "Jul 10 09:35:14 linux gconfd (myuser-4526): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/opt/gnome/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2"

I have no idea what that means?

Any advice would be appreciated.

What was the error? What happens if you run gnome from the command line like this:

"startx /usr/bin/gnome-session"
