Gnome-terminal exhibits strange behavior on exit

I'm running Fedora 16 32 bit on an Intel LGA775 (hey, it was cheap) board with 1.5gb ram, 800mhz FSB. Sata 80gb hard drive. 3.0ghz CPU. When I start gnome-terminal it opens properly and all commands run fine but when I close it - either with "exit" command or by clicking on the upper right hand x button the window begins to shrink both horizontaly and vertically until it's just a itty bitty window in the upper left of the screen with a dialog in the upper bar that says "The child process exited normally with status 0", and there's a button to the right of that dialog marked "Relaunch". The only way to close the terminal is to right click and do "Close Window". Any help is greatly appreciated.

With Gnome-Terminal open, launch a new Gnome-Terminal from the command line and read any errors that are displayed. Close the second Gnome-Terminal and read the errors in the original once again. That may give you some hints about what is happening. Post any error notices here, too. :)

Odd, it stopped doing that. I don't know why. I did what you recommended but no errors occured. Naturally, because it's working okay right now. Wierd.

Okay it's acting up again. I tried what you said and there were no error messages.
I need to correct something. Clicking on the upper right hand "x" button closes the window normally. Only if I type "exit" does the window misbehave as described.

It's behaving now. I fixed it by right clicking in the window, hovering over "Profiles" and clicked "Profile Preferences". Then after clicking the tab "Title and Command" I clicked the button to the right of the dialog "When command exits:" and chose "Exit the terminal". Click, click and more click. I'm actually more of a pure console (run level 3) person when possible but so many things require a GUI I find myself in run level 5 a lot nowadays.

Very weird, Sharpy.

I just spent about 10 minutes searching online and I can't find doodly about this.

Stand by for some advice from those wiser than I am, Sharpy-Warpy.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you. :(

Ah! COOL! You fixed it. I haven't used Gnome-Terminal in quite some time. I figured it might be something simple like that. :)

Yes, and thank you very much for your replies. I like gnome-terminal, for me it seems to have more options for the things I need. Like configuring a special profile with which to run my command line programs like Alpine and Midnight Commander. With gnome-terminal I can run them in full screen mode. Thanks again, vtel57!
