Gnome event sounds & MIDI

hey,

Event sounds in Gnome are distorted beyond recognition!!! Its just all blips and crackles. Normal audio playback is fine (MP3s, Video, DVD blah blah), its just these event sounds. Any ideas about how to fix this?

Also, I can't get MIDIs to playback. KMidi says "Can't open Output Device".
Maybe this is related to another problem of mine: Sounds/music in games, especially TuxRacer and Chromium is mega-choppy - can;t really make anything out.
