gnome shared library error

When trying to login to a gnome-session I am getting this error:
"stderr is not a tty - where are you?
gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libjpeg.so.62: file too short"

This error started after trying to install qt-x11-free-3.1.2. I tried reinstalling it and also reinstalling jpegsrc.v6b. I can start gnome in a failsafe gnome-session but thats all. I've searched all over and cannot find any information on the "file too short" part concerning libjpeg.so.62. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Well apparently the answer was to try reinstalling qt again but, half way through have PG&E turn the power off. Once restarted everything should be fine. Makes sense right? Alright, by the numbers.
1) install qt 2-3 times
2) install jpesrc v6b 2-3 times
3) on the third qt install shut off power
4) voila! everyting works great

Please, experts do not try this at home (N()()B'S ONLY).
