gnome sessions startup causes progamme to run slow

Hi all,
hope someone can help me out on this. I'm running a graphical programme from gnome sessions start ups. When I do this the graphics run slow. I've found if I put a sleep before the programme starts the programme runs full speed for some time then slows down. Unless the programme sleep is greater than 2 mins, it then runs full speed. So basically

0 sleep programme starts in so-mo
30 sleep runs full speed for 5 mins then so-mo
60 sleep runs full speed for 7 mins then so-mo
....

120 sleep runs full speed all the time.

This happens weather I'm running full gnome or gnome-core. I fact surprisingly core takes even longer delays. I'm guessing this is something to do with the graphics card start up (NVidia) but really have no idea. Has anyone else found this or any work rounds

Thanks in advance

When desktops like KDE or gnome start up they often run cpu /disk /memory hogging programs eg updatedb, file-finding and indexing programs etc.

You could try to find out what process is hogging your system resources by running top in a terminal window when your PC slows down.
