Whenever I try to start a new gnome-session with command line I get this error:

(gnome-session:26232): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I have tried it both while xdm is running and while it is not. I'm also having a similar problem with KDE, it sends an error telling me that it was not able to connect to the X-server. xfce, on the other hand works perfectly. I have a suspicion it's a problem with the way the X-server is set up, but I'm enough of a newbie to not be able to find the problem.

if you are running this command as root then you may need to allow root access to your non-root owned X server. as the normal user, run "xhost +localhost" to allow all local connectiosn to connect the the X server instance.
