gnome-screensaver vs. xscreensaver

Hi there,
I've been getting increasingly irritated with gnome-screensaver in the gnome control centre. It seems to be loads less powerful than xscreensaver, which used to be present when I ran Fedora 2, 3 and 4. (I now run SuSE 10.0 with gnome 2.12.) I have installed all the extra screensavers from xscreensaver but I can't edit their preferences at all, for example I can't get one of my favorites, XAnalogTV to grab desktop images. The only thing gnome-screensaver lets me do is choose which one I want and how long the idle delay is before it comes on. Can anyone tell me either if there is a way to manipulate the screensaver's preferences through gnome-screensaver, or if not if there is a way to replace gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver? I have xscreensaver but it doesn't affect which screensaver is being used as gnome-screensaver is currently doing that.

Cheers,
Tom

I have the same problem with kde screensaver, I prefer the older xscreensaver. And some screensavers from kde are buggy.

So I use xscreensaver!!
xscreensaver&
settings
in displaymode,
choose XanalogTV
I also have Only one screensaver, don't remember what it does.
Advanced
choose an image randomly, put your directory , and put all your girlfriends image inside
then check with File->Screensave now (I don't know the exact name, I'm in french language)
Quit
Wait

Not sure it answers your questions but for me it works as expected.

The thing is, setting what you want in xscreensaver won't actually change what screensaver appears as its the gnome-screensaver that does that. Is it possible to switch this so gnome-screensaver does nothing and xscreensaver is in control?

Same thing. I just want to change the default images that xanalogtv uses, but can't figure out an easy way to find this information. Even on the Gnome page it doesn't really document things very well.
