Probably your Gnome config files are broken. Try going to a real terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2,F3,etc.) and log in normally. Then issue command
rm -rf .gnome*
This will remove all gnome config files from your home dir. This is okay, because the next time you login they will be recreated with default values. To get back to X (graphical mode) try Ctrl-Alt-F7. If this does not help, then you might have to reinstall gnome-panel (see Redhat docs for more info on that).
