Question Gnome or KDE

What do you prefer, Gnome or KDE and why.
I would like to know the difference.

As I understand it, the main difference is under the they handle COM objects. But I don't know much about COM.

I find K and GNOME seem to leapfrog one another. I like GNOME on version X, but then K looks better on X+1, so I like K better. In terms of apps, neither really has any applications that one could consider mature.

So pick the one that's prettier, at least for now.
And keep up on the religious war that's going on between the two groups. It's fun to watch.

I prefer KDE. For the simple reason that whenever I have tried to use gnome, the nautilus browser and file manager kept on crashing. Maybe its my fault, but I don't think so becuse I am running a stock standard Red Hat 7.3 install.

KDE never crashes anything 9of course I don't even try and use any of the K apps - they have more bugs than the KGB outpost) but everything else runs fine.

Now I am used to it and have no reason to switch.

I handily prefer KDE to Gnome, for three main reasons:

1. Better attention to detail in KDE
2. KDE is prettier
3. I find gnome's widgets to be ugly and more difficult to use that KDE's.

That doesn't mean I discriminate and Gnome apps like Gimp.

all IMO, of course.

I find the same thing with gnome. In the base look, the widgets are big and ugly, and the fonts they use on the main interface are, too. Reminds me of the way motif used to look. But that can be corrected by using different themes and styles. Once you find a nice theme, gnome doesn't look so bad.

I don't use KDE anymore, but I used to instead of Gnome because KDE did look nicer, seemed to have a better implementation of things I wanted, and crashed less.

I still use Kmail, but in Flux rather than the hungry beast KDE.

That's the nice thing, you can like bits and pieces of all the wm, and use them in the fastest environment you want. I also use Gnome's Galeon as my default web browser, so there ya go. Linux is so versatile that you don't have to debate what wm is better, but rather take the great things from each and make one of your own

I used to use KDE when I was running Mandy 7.2, but I switched to a much more minimalist approach to working and simply have them both installed so that I can use absolutely everything under my SawFish environment.
