GNOME not obeying XFree86Config settings for screen resolutions
 

Hi, I'm quite new to linux and have recently moved to slackware from debian, but here is my problem:

I'm using GNOME 2.4 on a GeForce MX4 440 and a Dell M992 19" Monitor.
In Windows XP sp1 the card and monitor easily does 1600x1200 @ 85Hz, but when I boot into GNOME and try to adjust the screen resolution, it is stuck on 85Hz and can only do 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768.

I have edited /etc/X11XF86Config file which now displays "1024x768" as the primary resololutions for each colour depth, but it still will only show in 1024x768?

I've read through the tutorial on this site but it only explains the xf86config command in a little more detail.

Any help would be appreciated!

You haven't forgotten to install nvidia official drivers for Linux have you? :). If you did, forgot it, install first Slackware's kernel sources, because you will be asked for it while installing nvidia drivers :). The generic drivers do not provide any 3D acceleration nor higher resolutions than that (for safety reasons). So get them first ;)

I did actually - I haven't yet installed the official drivers - thanks for that, I'll keep you posted

I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers from their website, edited XF86Config so the driver showed as "nvidia" as it recommends, and lo and behold, glorious 1600x1200 appeared in the resolutions list! :D

I have S-Video on the card which is used under windows, but I have requirement for it under linux yet, but thanks for the help dude :cool:

And thumbs up for you :). Most of the peoples who needs to install the nvidia drivers first download, then ask for help(I was one, long ago). You did it all by your own hand and you'd be very proud of it ;)

I was thrown and forgot about the official drivers because I never got the card working in debian, and when I moved to Slackware the other day it found the card straight away so I (somewhat stupidly) forgot to check for the latest official drivers...
