gnome missing minimized icons

I used to have a working default gnome top and bottom panels. The bottom panel contains the minimized icons such an xterm or other applications.
Today I removed the bottom panel (thought I could maximize the desktop space), and all minimized windows can't be restored because when I minimize them, the icons goes to the lower right corner and disappear.
I added a bottom panel back but there is no tray to keep the minimized icons. Please help! Thanks!

Found the solution from a ubuntu chap

Basically open a xterm or a terminal.
Issue the following command to restore the original panels:
[ckgan@centos52-64-dell ~]$ gconftool-2 --shutdown
[ckgan@centos52-64-dell ~]$ rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
[ckgan@centos52-64-dell ~]$ pkill gnome-panel

This is a life saver!
