Gnome Login Manager question

How can I disable the beep??

I use the graphical login screen of Gnome (2.4) on my laptop and whenever I start it it beeps at me. I've found no setting in the Login Manager and google doesn't find me an answer as well.

Do you have an idea?

yeah, it's just a standard PC speaker beep

Edit: Update: I found the setting to disable the beep in Gnome but it doesn't affect the login screen.

i dont know how much help this will be since i am still a newbie myself but ive found if you use alsa, the "Spkr" slidebar in the gui controls the beeps, mine used to beep on every key i hit no matter what, and this solved my problem yet still let me listen to music via XMMS.

note: you dont have to be in gnome to access this
from the command promt su to root, then type "alsamixer"
the setting you will be looking for is "PC Speak" you will most likely have to hit the right arrow key till you see it.

Well, that notebook is my only PC that does *not* use alsa (so far).

But you had a nice idea. I didn't think of it before and with aumix I'm now setting the PC speaker volume to zero at boot time and the beep is gone.
