Gnome Install Issues on Gentoo

So I do a Stage 1 install of Gentoo on my PC and everything runs fine. Now I need some sort of shell or whatever it is called under linux. I installed Xfree86 4.3 and did the "xf86config" configuration. Started X and it all runs well. Now I tried to do "emerge gnome" and it downloads and it does something not sure if it installed but yeah it did take awhile.

So after that is all done I fire up "gnome-session" and I get a "GTK: Can't Open Display." Hmmm.... I searched these forums and I found a thread to see if Gnome really was installed. It said to "whereis gnome" and if it pointed to /usr/include/gnome then something was wrong and I would need to install it and it did point to that directory. Gnome.org is probably one of the shittiest sites on the internet when it comes to helping you. So I came here. I also looked at some other website called Gnomedesktop.org and they had some guide to setup Gnome but I'm utterly confused.

So is there anything I would need to do to install Gnome. I've installed xfce4 before but I'd really want to use Gnome as it is much nicer looking to me.

Oh and I've tried Garnome. WAY confused.

Help a newbie out =/ installing Gnome on Gentoo

From your message it sounds like you are trying to type gnome-session into the console? If you you need to instead edit or create a file in you home directory called .xinitrc
In this file you should have
Code:

exec gnome-session
If this is not the problem then how did the emerge finish? Did you notice any error messages?
